The Roman Catholic Church and faith is broad and extensive enough that I think it's unfair to call it a cult. However, some restrictive orders of nuns and monks could be seen as cult-like from the outside. That said, the cloistered lifestyle is a special one that isn't necessarily seen as a threat to individual freedom and dignity. Opus Dei is a bridge between conservative religious orders and the general public. Could Opus Dei be said to have a stranglehold over its members lives?
